Editorial Update: The Year of the Underdog

We’re more than halfway through 2025. And while some are only now beginning to feel the ground shift, the truth is, some of us have been walking through uncertainty for years.

We know this terrain.

Because if you’ve ever sat at rock bottom, been misunderstood, started again with nothing, or kept going without a single cheer, this year probably feels familiar. Not easier, just not new.

You know how to breathe through the waves.
You know how to rise without the crowd.
You’ve been forged in silence.

And now, the world is beginning to notice.

This is the year of the underdog.

From sports fields to quiet homes, from big stages to small corners of the internet — underdogs are rising. Not with loud declarations, but with quiet resolve.

Earlier this year, Tottenham Hotspur surprised even their own fans by soaring to a Europa League title after years of setbacks and without winning a single trophy since 2008.

Scotland’s national football team made history by reaching the knockout stage of the Euros — something they hadn’t done in decades. No one expected it, but they showed up, held their ground, and played with heart.

Simone Biles returned to the world stage to honour herself. After stepping back to protect her mental health, she came back in 2025 stronger, quieter, and golden.

Ava DuVernay finally received the Oscar nod that had eluded her because she kept creating. She told stories that mattered, with or without recognition.

And closer to home, there are thousands of women starting over — launching businesses after divorce, going back to school after raising families, speaking up after years of silence. Their names may not be in the headlines, but their courage is felt.

They’re not waiting to be chosen. They’ve chosen themselves.

Underdogs aren’t surprised by storms, we’ve lived through them. While others are just learning to let go of control, we’ve mastered the art of building with no guarantees.

And now, something is shifting.

This year doesn’t belong to the loudest. It belongs to the steady ones. The ones who kept going when no one was watching.

The ones who once sat alone are becoming the ones others look to, not because we have all the answers, but because we’ve learned how to keep walking when the map disappears.

If this year has felt messy, uncertain, or strangely familiar, don’t panic. You’re not behind. You’re being prepared.

If that’s you, welcome.
This is your season.
And you were made for it.
