Jamie Tedrick-Monroe On Why Feeling Everything Again Is a Sign You Are Healing

There is a phase in healing where everything inside you begins to wake up again. At first, this awakening is subtle. A small moment of laughter that comes out of you without restraint. A colour that feels brighter than usual. A desire to try something new. A spark of curiosity that surfaces after years of just getting through the day. These are the early signs of your return to aliveness.

For a long time, you survived by shutting down parts of yourself. Not because you were weak, but because survival required it. Your system learned to numb what it could not handle. It learned to minimise joy because joy made you visible. It learned to suppress anger because anger was punished. It learned to bury hope because hope was dangerous. It learned to silence desire because desire opened you up to disappointment or exploitation.

Numbing was intelligence. Numbing was strategy. Numbing was protection. But protection becomes confinement when the danger is gone.

The return to aliveness begins slowly, often without your permission. One day you feel something small and unexpected. You might brush it off. You might even feel afraid of it. But the truth is, the energy inside you knows when it is time to rise.

People assume that numbness is the opposite of pain. They forget that numbness is also the opposite of joy. When you start feeling again, you feel everything. Your emotions grow louder. Your body becomes more responsive. Your intuition becomes clearer. Your desires become stronger. You start longing for things you once told yourself you did not need.

And this is where fear shows up. Not the fear of danger, but the fear of living.

Feeling alive means surrendering control. It means letting yourself experience the full spectrum of emotion. It means remembering that joy and grief are siblings. It means acknowledging that to open your heart is to risk loss, vulnerability, disappointment, and change.

But it also means giving yourself access to meaning, connection, purpose, fulfilment, and an inner fire that survival once smothered.

The return to aliveness is not a gentle process. Your emotions come back in waves. One day you feel grounded and open. The next you feel overwhelmed by everything you tried not to feel for years. This does not mean you are regressing. It means your system is recalibrating. It means your capacity for emotion is expanding.

You might feel anger more intensely than expected. Not the chaotic anger you feared in the past. This is a cleaner anger. A righteous, boundary-protecting anger that rises when you are ready to reclaim what was taken from you. It signals that your spirit has woken up enough to recognise that something is not aligned.

You might feel grief more deeply. Not because you are stuck, but because numbness once prevented you from grieving at all. You grieve the time you lost. You grieve the person you were forced to become. You grieve the softness you had to hide. You grieve the dreams you set aside. You grieve the moments where you tolerated the intolerable.

Grief is not the enemy. Grief is the proof that you are alive.

You might feel joy in a way that scares you. Joy requires trust. Joy requires openness. Joy asks you to receive without the expectation of loss. Joy is an act of courage for the once brokenhearted.

You might feel desire. For rest. For connection. For passion. For a life that feels bigger than the one survival allowed you to imagine. Desire signals that your life force is returning. It signals that there is something inside you that wants to rise again.

Feeling alive again is not about living a perfect life. It is about living a life that is fully inhabited. It is about reclaiming your internal permission to feel everything without abandoning yourself.

But here is the truth most people do not talk about. Feeling alive is easy. Staying alive is the work. Not physically alive, but emotionally alive. Present. Aware. Connected to your inner world.

We have been taught to fear our emotional depth. To equate sensitivity with weakness. To avoid feeling too much. To dismiss our intuition. To pathologise our instincts. But emotional depth is not instability. It is intelligence. It gives you access to inner truths that numbness hides. It helps you understand what you need, what you want, what you deserve, and what no longer fits.

The return to aliveness is not about controlling your emotions. It is about learning how to flow with them. It is about trusting your internal rhythm instead of forcing yourself to match the expectations of others. It is about allowing your emotions to inform you rather than overwhelm you.

There will be moments where the intensity scares you. That is normal. You are not broken. You are recalibrating. Your capacity is growing. You are learning how to feel things you once avoided. You are expanding the emotional bandwidth you need for a life beyond survival.

Eventually, the waves will find a rhythm. Your emotions will stop feeling like intruders and start feeling like visitors. You will learn the difference between your old triggers and your new truths. You will learn the difference between fear and intuition. You will learn the difference between anxiety and resonance. You will learn the difference between reaction and response.

The return to aliveness is a spiritual experience disguised as emotional growth. It is the moment your shadow and your light stop fighting for dominance and begin working together. Your shadow keeps you aware. Your light keeps you open. Together they make you whole.

You do not need to rush this process. You do not need to perform it. You do not need to prove anything. You only need to stay present with yourself. Presence is the doorway. Aliveness is the result.

One day you will wake up and realise that you feel more grounded than you ever have. Not because life is perfect, but because you no longer have to shrink, numb, or disconnect from yourself to survive it.

This is your return. Not to who you were before, but to who you are now. Not a version untouched by darkness, but a version shaped by it in ways that now serve your expansion. Not a version defined by the past, but a version informed by it. Not a version that fears emotion, but a version that trusts it.

This is your aliveness. Not a spark. Not a flame. A steady burn that carries you forward, whenever you are ready.
