They said, “Just stop the pill.”
And like many of us, I thought that’s all it would take.
Stop the pill. Start trying. Wait six months. If nothing happens, come back.
So I came back.
I did the blood tests, the poking, the prodding.
What followed was anything but simple.
But no one ever said, “What you eat might be influencing your fertility.”
No one told me that food could impact blood sugar balance, gut health, inflammation, hormone function — even egg quality.
No one taught us in school how food fuels the systems that make conception possible.
To me, food had been more about controlling the outside. Not supporting the inside.
And during fertility struggles, the advice became overwhelming:
“Eat more protein!”
“Cut sugar!”
“Ditch dairy!”
“Quit gluten!”
Food quickly turns into one more thing to get “right.”
And when that happens, it becomes pressure — not support.
Let’s change that.
This isn’t about restriction.
This is about rebuilding.
You’re not “on a diet” — you’re nourishing your body from the inside out.
You don’t need to be perfect — you just need to be present and consistent.
Because every single bite is a message to your body:
“I’ve got you. Let’s do this together.”
What I Wish I’d Known Sooner
I didn’t grow up knowing food could support fertility.
I learned it the hard way — through years of “everything looks fine” when nothing felt fine.
After methotrexate during my ectopics, years on the pill, and multiple rounds of antibiotics, my body was struggling. My gut was a mess. My skin flared. I was anaemic, anxious, and disconnected from my cycle. I kept trying to fix it with more supplements — but they weren’t reaching the root.
And while supplements can be helpful and sometimes necessary, I didn’t realise that whole foods are almost always the better option.
Synthetic forms? They can create imbalances or stress in a body that’s already overwhelmed.
It wasn’t until I shifted my approach (with professional help) —
Until I supported my Gut to Help my Body absorb the right nutrients —
Until I used food to nourish, to support, to rebuild —
that things finally started to change.
Not overnight. Not perfectly.
But gently. Steadily. Deeply.
And that changed everything.
Here’s What I Wish Someone Had Told Me:
Food is medicine — it nourishes your cells, balances hormones, supports egg quality, and helps your body detox and thrive.
It’s not just calories or cravings — it’s information your body uses to regulate hormones, immunity, energy, and mood.
When you eat to nourish, not control, food becomes an ally — not a stressor.
The right food gives your body the tools to do what it’s already trying to do: conceive.
Food isn’t everything, but if it’s working against you (too much sugar, ultra-processed, nutrient-poor), it will show up in your cycle, mood, and energy.
And when food starts working for you, everything can shift — your cycle, your clarity, your confidence.
You don’t have to change everything at once.
Just one nourishing plate at a time.
That’s more powerful than you think.
Start With Listening, Not Restricting
Your fertility journey is unique — just like your body.
Before adjusting what’s on your plate, tune in to what your body is really asking for.
Ask yourself:
What gives me energy and steadiness?
What leaves me bloated, foggy, or off-cycle?
What makes me feel grounded in my body?
Food isn’t just fuel — it’s feedback. The more connected you are to how you feel, the easier it becomes to choose what helps you feel well.
Practical Ways to Nourish Your Fertility
You don’t need a strict “fertility diet.” But you can give your body more of what it naturally needs to support conception — one intentional bite at a time.
Imagine each food you put on your plate as a building block for your fertility. Beyond the beautiful colours, think about adding foods throughout your day that naturally provide key nutrients — all vital for hormone balance and egg health.
These nutrients support your body’s ability to raise progesterone, protect your eggs, and reduce inflammation — without relying solely on supplements.
A Fertility-Supportive Plate Might Include:
Protein (~30g per meal) – stabilises energy, balances blood sugar, supports egg health
Colourful fruits & vegetables – rich in antioxidants that protect eggs, balance hormones, and reduce inflammation
Whole grains / complex carbs – fuel your energy and support gut health
Healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, salmon, nuts) – essential for hormone production and egg membrane quality
Why colour matters:
💚 Green (spinach, broccoli) → folate, iron, magnesium
❤️ Red (berries, beetroot) → antioxidants to protect eggs
🧡 Orange/Yellow (carrots, mango) → beta-carotene for hormone health
💜 Purple (blueberries, aubergine) → anti-inflammatory support
Key Nutrients to Support Your Fertility Naturally
Omega-3 Fatty Acids (salmon, flaxseeds, walnuts, chia seeds)
Support hormone production, reduce inflammation, and help regulate mood.
Antioxidants (berries, spinach, kale, colorful veggies like red peppers and carrots)
Protect eggs from oxidative stress and support overall reproductive health.
Iron ( lentils, beans, red meat, quinoa, spinach)
Essential for oxygen transport and healthy ovulation.
Vitamin C (citrus fruits, bell peppers, broccoli, strawberries)
Supports progesterone production and helps protect cells.
Folate/ Folic Acid (dark leafy greens, lentils, asparagus, fortified grains)
Critical for DNA synthesis and early fetal development.
Zinc (pumpkin seeds, chickpeas, nuts, beef)
Important for hormone balance and egg development.
Choline (eggs, soybeans, chicken, fish)
Supports cell structure and brain development.
Vitamin D (fatty fish, fortified dairy or plant milk, sunlight exposure)
Regulates menstrual cycles and improves fertility outcomes.
Magnesium (nuts, seeds, whole grains, leafy greens)
Helps regulate blood sugar and supports hormone balance.
Remember, nutritious food can:
Support egg quality, hormone production, and a healthy uterine lining
Balance blood sugar and calm inflammation
Nourish your gut and help your body absorb key fertility nutrients
Support emotional wellbeing and ease stress
Leave you feeling grounded, calm, and connected to your body
Support Your Gut — Your Inner Fertility Ally
Your gut does more than digest — it impacts hormone balance, immunity, and nutrient absorption. If it’s out of balance, your body might not absorb the nutrients you’re choosing so intentionally.
Be mindful of what you’re feeding your body:
Read labels, avoid unnecessary additives, and keep ingredients simple. Sometimes, small swaps can make a big difference.
Signs your gut might need more support? Bloating, fatigue, mood swings, skin issues, or brain fog.
Daily Gut Support Tips
Cut back on ultra-processed foods and added sugar
Add fermented foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, or kimchi — or take a quality probiotic
Include omega-3 rich foods (salmon, flax, walnuts) to help regulate mood and brain function
Eat antioxidant-rich fruits and veggies (berries, greens, colourful veg) to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress
Balance blood sugar by eating regular meals with enough protein and healthy fats to avoid emotional crashes and hormonal swings
Stay hydrated with filtered water and herbal teas
Eat slowly and chew mindfully
Prioritise rest, sleep, and stress relief — your nervous system and gut health are deeply connected
Food is the soil your fertility grows in.
You can’t force a flower to bloom — but you can enrich the soil, water it well, and create the right conditions for growth.
