Editorial Update: From Texas Floods to UEFA Goals

We’re back from our breather—and what a week it’s been.

Our hearts ache for Texas, where devastating floods have torn through communities and left families reeling. To all those affected, and to the brave families of first responders, we send you our deepest love and prayers. There are few things more heartbreaking than when a search and rescue turns into search and recovery. The acronym doesn’t change—but the meaning, oh, how it shifts. It becomes quieter. Weightier. Final.

Grief doesn’t follow a script. It doesn’t respond to clever quotes or tidy timelines. It arrives uninvited, makes herself comfortable, and refuses to leave until she’s good and ready. We can write all we want, read all we can—but there’s no map through this terrain. Only presence. Only patience. Only kindness.

And yet, even in the midst of sorrow, there is still light.

This week, across Europe, we’ve seen that light in the determined eyes of athletes on the pitch. The UEFA Women’s Football Championship is underway, and with it comes the power of sport to remind us of resilience, unity, and the sheer beauty of trying your best, together. These women are not just playing for trophies—they're playing for every girl who was ever told “you can’t.” And they are answering back with grace, grit, and goals.

So let this be your gentle reminder today: Be kind. Be tender. Be fierce in your compassion. Whether the person in front of you is walking with joy or with sorrow, you may not know which. But your kindness could be the difference.

I leave you with this poem—one that speaks to life’s deepest lessons:

“I walked a mile with Pleasure;
She chatted all the way;
But left me none the wiser
For all she had to say.

I walked a mile with Sorrow;
And ne’er a word said she;
But, oh! The things I learned from her,
When Sorrow walked with me.”
