Ad: From Flowers to Futures: Why Global QI is Built on Giving

Between 2017 and 2020, I worked as a pedagogical leader across country areas of South Australia, coaching teachers to refine their craft. At one school I met Linny, a woman from Zambia with a remarkable story.

As a young girl, Linny was punished for something beyond her control. She had been late to clean her classroom and was beaten and shamed. From that moment, she vowed she would one day create a school where children felt safe. Years later, she did just that in Kitwe, Zambia.

When she invited me to provide training for her teachers, I was ready to go. Then the pandemic struck and borders closed. I sat at home wondering how I could possibly help her community from so far away.

The answer came to me in the garden. I began picking flowers and offering them to friends and neighbours in exchange for donations to Linny’s school. Those donations paid the school fees of children whose families could not afford them. Unlike in Australia, children in Zambia cannot attend school without uniforms and fees paid upfront. For less than the price of a tank of fuel in Australia, a child in Kitwe could attend school for an entire year.

The joy spread quickly. Parents felt relief, children gained opportunities, neighbours delighted in flowers, and I discovered a new way to connect hearts across continents. Even now, many students know me as “Flowers.”
